Kommissionens ordförande Ursula von der Leyen lade den 19 mars fram förslaget om en helt ny företagsform för startups och ”innovativa” företag inom EU – ”EU Inc.”. Kommissionen vill utveckla strukturer som inte är kopplade till någon nationell lagstiftning i medlemsländerna.

Ursula von der Leyen, 67, is facing pushback from some member countries.

On the 13th floor of the Berlaymont building in Brussels, Ursula von der Leyen has built a presidential operation that exerts control over every aspect of what goes on inside the European Commission.

There’s frustration inside the vast Berlaymont building too, where commissioners feel shut out of major decisions while their boss and her team take the lead.

The people with knowledge describe an official obsessed with demonstrating that she’s in charge, an approach that’s alienated many senior officials.

The relative power of the various institutions that make up the EU has ebbed and flowed since its inception in the 1950s.

Another example was von der Leyen’s handling last summer of the EU’s long-term budget. The draft plan wasn’t shared with commissioners until the last minute. EU countries were also unhappy with the lack of consultation.

Within hours of the grand announcement, Berlin publicly rejected the plan.


Defenders say she’s injected the position with fresh authority, enhancing the role of the EU on the world stage.

Cognitive blind spots are undermining our ability to see the world as it is, rather than as we would like it to be. At the start of the 21st century, western elites generally assumed that globalisation, democracy and the free market were self-evidently good, and would keep spreading, creating peace. N o longer.  FIS, Swiss Federal Intelligence Service, has published a manual about cognitive blind spots. 18 different cognitive biases that hamper our thinking, such as “group think” (adhering to the cosy assumptions of our tribe), “anchoring” (relying exclusively on whatever information we see first, say on social media),  “confirmation bias” (only seeing data that reinforces pre-existing views),  “mirror imaging” (assuming others think like us),  “absence of evidence” bias (failing to think about the data we lack)  and “survivorship bias” (judging data only with success stories, not failures).
