The Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (the AMOC) — of which the Gulf Stream is part — works like a giant global conveyor belt, taking warm water from the tropics toward the far North Atlantic, where the water cools, becomes saltier and sinks deep into the ocean, before spreading southward. “But we can at least say that we are heading in the direction of the tipping point under climate change,” Stefan Rahmstorf, a physical oceanographer at Potsdam University in Germany, who was not involved with the study, said it was “a major advance in AMOC stability science.” “It confirms that the AMOC has a tipping point beyond which it breaks down if the Northern Atlantic Ocean is diluted with freshwater,” he told CNN. Previous studies finding the AMOC’s tipping point used much simpler models, he said, giving hope to some scientists that it might not be found under more complex models. Förra veckan deltog SMHI på ett uppstartsmöte för ett europeiskt forskningsprojekt om klimattippningspunkter.  Projektet samlar forskare från en rad olika discipliner för att förbättra vår förståelse för tippningspunkter, och hur de påverkar både ekosystem och samhällen.  En så kallad tröskelpunkt innebär att ett klimat- eller ekosystem på kort tid går från ett tillstånd till ett annat. Det skapar en dominoeffekt där andra klimatsystem påverkas, och där konsekvenserna kan bli okontrollerbara.  Ett exempel är Grönlandsisen som smälter i högre takt än vad forskarna hittills trott. That is unusual, and dangerous Its long duration is a problem. The large, persistent mass of cold air and high pressure influences wind patterns known as jet streams across the Pacific and the Indian Ocean.  Where jet streams that blow over land from the ocean are diverted, that land loses moisture and can suffer from drought. The land to which that jet stream is diverted gets more moisture, and can be flooded. Eventually stronger winds or ocean currents nudge the system out of El Niño and back into the neutral phase. If stronger winds persist they can lock the system into an opposite phase: La Niña.  This is what enso looked like in 2022.  Om inte världens ledare kommer med radikalt förnyade klimatlöften så går vi mot tre graders uppvärmning innan seklets slut. En sådan hetta kommer på många platser att leda till systemkollaps av el-och vattenförsörjning. Enda ljusglimten i lägesrapporten från FN är att världens länder kommer att öka sina utsläpp med 10,6 procent till 2030, i stället för 13,7 procent enligt förra årets prognos.
