This time Japan’s Ministry of Finance had help from a significant quarter — US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent. 
This matters beyond Japanese shores because the carry trade — the strategy of borrowing in yen and parking in a higher-yielding currency like the Mexican peso — has been an ultra-reliable source of profits. 
Over five years, it has strongly beaten even the S&P 500’s total return.

The weakness of the Japanese currency was a problem not just for Tokyo but also Washington.
U.S. and Japan are seeking to contain tremors that could be triggered by a cratering Japanese currency.

The yen’s slide to a 40-year low indirectly threatened to bump up U.S. interest rates and risked throwing a wrench in plans to pull billions of dollars of Japanese investment into the U.S. 

Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent made a fortune trading currencies and other assets for George Soros’s investment firm. Bessent said he would encourage the Fed to “upsize” the little-used Foreign and International Monetary Authorities Repo Facility. 

Japan in April and May burned through some $70 billion of foreign-exchange reserves to prop up the yen, only to have it weaken again. Preliminary data suggest Japan has spent around $50 billion in this latest burst of intervention.

Oil prices fall to three-week low after Trump calls off planned attack. Iran’s foreign ministry said there are no talks happening with the U.S.


US President Donald Trump said he's holding off delivering new strikes on Iran after Tehran and other Middle Eastern powers told him they're working on an agreement that might quickly reopen the Strait of Hormuz.

Trump agreed to cancel the attack "subject to being able to rapidly make a DEAL" and said the deal would include the "Immediate, Complete, and Total OPENING OF THE HORMUZ STRAIT, 

and an end to Iran's nuclear threat".

Stock markets are not only ignoring the obvious threats, but seem imbued with extreme optimism. In the autumn of 1929, Irving Fisher, one of the greatest American economists, stated: “Stock prices have reached what looks like a permanently high plateau.”  This turned out to be one of the most incorrect forecasts ever made: in short order, US and global stock markets were hit by the Great Crash, which was followed by the Great Depression.
