China buys around 90% of Iran’s oil
Blacklisting Chinese companies risks opening a new economic confrontation with Beijing. Doing so now would fracture US-China ties just weeks before Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping are set to meet in September.
Asked directly about hitting China with new economic measures on Monday, Bessent said “no one is above the reach of US sanctions” but that he preferred “quiet diplomacy,” adding “we’re not going to name names.”

Reports that the Treasury Department could use its general account to buy back more of its longer-term government notes and bonds may be temporarily calming markets.
But it’s not as extreme of an intervention as Mario Draghi’s “whatever it takes” pledge to preserve the euro or Ben Bernanke’s bazooka program in response to the collapse of Lehman Brothers, experts say.
Instead, even with the news that the agency may tap its general account, the buyback program remains relatively small, leaving analysts to question why Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent chose this moment to redouble his Treasury’s efforts to calm markets.

Inflation is 3% to 4% and has been above the Fed’s target since 2021. Unemployment is 4.1%, full employment by any definition. The deficit is running near 6% of gross domestic product, a number America has never before produced in peacetime at full employment.
The national debt crossed $40 trillion the same week Treasury intervened. Net interest will exceed $1.1 trillion this fiscal year, more than the defense budget. The 10-year yield, even after the summer selloff, sits at or below the economy’s nominal growth rate.
Historically, that configuration is accommodative, not restrictive

Det är budskapet i Adrian Wooldridges nya bok Centrists of the World Unite!
Makten har flyttat från folket till överstatliga institutioner. EU är det tydligaste exemplet: ett enormt maskineri, byggt för att främja liberala värden, men i stora delar utom räckhåll för folkligt ansvarsutkrävande. Unionen är svag utåt och i stort sett geopolitiskt irrelevant, men kompenserar genom ständigt utvidgade regleringar som påverkar medlemsstaternas inrikespolitik, företagens förutsättningar och människors vardag.
Konstitution, maktdelning, tröghet och internationella konventioner är väsentliga komponenter i en liberal demokrati. Men det system och den byråkrati som ska säkra demokratin mot att förfalla till rent majoritetsvälde är också som gjort för att göda en ny elit, ett nytt frälse. Och det är vad som har hänt.
Först och främst måste meritokratin återupprättas – vilket också var ämnet för Wooldridges förra bok.
Meritokratin var en av de bärande idéerna i modernitetens födelse: att kunskap och skicklighet skulle trumfa börd. I dag är det inte sällan börd som avgör om man får möjlighet att tillgodogöra sig kunskap och skicklighet. Och nätverk är ofta viktigare än kompetens i striden om åtråvärda positioner.

Several of our universities are among the best in the world. They are a major asset to this country, both economically and culturally. Long may this continue.
The fundamental problems are that we send too many of our youngsters to university, there are too many universities, and too many courses of little or no worth.
On top of this, many students face an appalling burden of debt which hangs over them for their early years of employment, squeezing their disposable income and causing anxiety.
