How to stop global warming. The answer is obvious. Two words, the first one starts with N. That’s right. Net zero. 

Scientists have understood for years that net zero is the point at which global warming stops, meaning temperatures cease rising.  

If you don’t get to net zero, the world will continue warming, and all the things we’re seeing at the moment will get more intense 

For the record, the chances of reaching net zero soon are remote. The longer we wait to reach net zero, the higher the eventual peak temperature will be, and the worse the associated damage. 

And please don’t say your country’s net zero efforts are pointless when it only accounts for a few per cent of global emissions. This buck-passing claim is made in dozens of countries, even though their combined emissions exceed China’s.

The cost of climate action cannot be ignored, but nor can the cost of inaction.

President Donald Trump claimed the US had “total control over the Hormuz Strait,” as Washington and Tehran hardened their positions in deadlocked negotiations over the critical waterway.

“At some point, maybe they’ll do something, and then they get blown away.”

The escalating rhetoric raises further doubt that any immediate deal can be reached.

Cognitive blind spots are undermining our ability to see the world as it is, rather than as we would like it to be. At the start of the 21st century, western elites generally assumed that globalisation, democracy and the free market were self-evidently good, and would keep spreading, creating peace. N o longer.  FIS, Swiss Federal Intelligence Service, has published a manual about cognitive blind spots. 18 different cognitive biases that hamper our thinking, such as “group think” (adhering to the cosy assumptions of our tribe), “anchoring” (relying exclusively on whatever information we see first, say on social media),  “confirmation bias” (only seeing data that reinforces pre-existing views),  “mirror imaging” (assuming others think like us),  “absence of evidence” bias (failing to think about the data we lack)  and “survivorship bias” (judging data only with success stories, not failures).
