30 augusti. US Heat. Super El Niño. Iceland voted against joining EU. Record High? Data centers.

 

The southern US faces temperatures as high as 46C this week as forecasters warn of “dangerous record-breaking” heat for tens of millions of people.

A high-pressure system known as a heat dome is sitting over the Southwest and south-central parts of the country, acting like a lid that prevents heat from escaping into the atmosphere.

Det som sker nu är inte normalt.

Vi har gått in i vad som ser ut att bli den kraftfullaste El Niño som vi som lever nu har varit med om. De indikatorer som forskarna använder för att mäta kraften i klimatfenomenet är just nu ”off the charts”.
Den amerikanska motsvarigheten till SMHI, NOAA, bedömer i  sin senaste uppdatering att risken för en ”mycket stark” El Niño – den högsta nivån på skalan – är 90 procent. Förra veckan gick den brittiska motsvarigheten Met Office ut med en ännu kraftfullare varning.
”Vi måste vara på det klara med att detta är något som vi aldrig har upplevt förut”, konstaterade professor Adam Scaife, chef för långsiktiga prognoser vid Met Office.

Att El Niño blir så kraftfull den här gången kan vara en slump.

Klimatkrisen kan omöjligt vara sant, för i så fall skulle jag redan ha vetat om det


Just this past week, AI chip designer Nvidia triggering a 8.7% rally in the company’s shares on Thursday. As the S&P 500 has outsize weightings in Big Tech companies including Nvidia, the chip giant’s rally propelled the index higher Thursday, even as the average stock underperformed the S&P 500.

The chart hows the number of trading sessions over the past few years when the S&P 500 posted a daily gain even as the index saw more decliners than advancers on the day. 

This year, the S&P 500 is already approaching the total number of such occasions seen in all of 2025.

Förbud mot kusinäktenskap och äktenskap mellan andra nära släktingar 
I lagrådsremissen föreslår regeringen att det ska införas ett förbud mot kusinäktenskap och äktenskap mellan andra nära släktingar.  



Iceland has voted against resuming talks on joining EU.   52.8%  rejected the government's proposal, while 47.2% said yes.

Do I believe every dollar invested in a data center is going to pay its developers back? Absolutely not. 

Some of these companies are only going to get a fraction of what they invested back. But we don’t know which company at this time. 

We have watched the leadership change through various companies, and there are literally hundreds of companies working in the ecosystem, any of which could rise up and become the next giant killer.

Right now, every data center built and turned on is immediately put to use. The market is demanding more data centers  - more computer power - not less. I don’t doubt that some hyper-scalers are overly optimistic about the future and their return on investment potential.
 
It’s just that nobody knows which one.

Cognitive blind spots are undermining our ability to see the world as it is, rather than as we would like it to be. At the start of the 21st century, western elites generally assumed that globalisation, democracy and the free market were self-evidently good, and would keep spreading, creating peace. N o longer.  FIS, Swiss Federal Intelligence Service, has published a manual about cognitive blind spots. 18 different cognitive biases that hamper our thinking, such as “group think” (adhering to the cosy assumptions of our tribe), “anchoring” (relying exclusively on whatever information we see first, say on social media),  “confirmation bias” (only seeing data that reinforces pre-existing views),  “mirror imaging” (assuming others think like us),  “absence of evidence” bias (failing to think about the data we lack)  and “survivorship bias” (judging data only with success stories, not failures). Stock markets are not only ignoring the obvious threats, but seem imbued with extreme optimism.
