ETF Is Ruining Capitalism; Liquidity, Judgment and Friedrich Hayek

Bild
Global capitalism is beset with problems, but a lack of liquidity is not one of them. More money flows through an ever bigger pool of investments each day.  The Global Financial Crisis of 2008 was barely even a speed bump. Twelve years later, Covid-19 did stem financial market activity for a while, but that is also now a thing of the past. The raw numbers of the most liquid markets are breathtaking.  The Bank for International Settlements recently published its latest three-yearly survey of trading in foreign exchange and interest rate derivatives — which are vital in keeping financial markets moving. Trade in interest rate derivatives this year is averaging $7.9 trillion per day.  ‘Twas not ever thus. In 1998, when the BIS did its first triennial survey, it was $265 billion. Trading in currencies is $9.6 trillion per day, this is triple the FX volume that the BIS recorded in the spring of 2007, on the eve of the GFC. https://www.bokus.com/bok/9780199756070/a-call-for-jud...

Make Them a Mar-a-Lago Accord They Can’t Refuse

Bild
All the questions arising from the hectic first month of the second Trump administration find their expression in the dollar. The idea is that other nations would agree to direct investment in the US to head off a trade war, and also coordinate to make their currencies stronger, and thus make the dollar more competitive. For the arguments as to why you should take this seriously, first read “A User’s Guide to Restructuring the Global Trading System” written by Stephen Miran, the hedge fund manager and former Treasury economist who is set to become the chair of Trump’s Council of Economic Advisors.  638199_A_Users_Guide_to_Restructuring_the_Global_Trading_System.pdf There’s a precedent in the 1985 Plaza Accord, in which officials from the then-much-smaller capitalist world agreed to intervene to weaken the dollar.   The nub is to get others to agree to the changes.  As Trump has shown in the last few weeks, there are plenty of other sticks in his arsenal beyond tariffs to ...

A ‘Mar-a-Lago Accord’; like Plaza Accord, followed by Louvre Accord

Bild
A grand multinational bargain that would deliberately weaken the dollar — helping American exporters compete with rivals such as China and Japan. Analysts have already settled on a name, the “Mar-a-Lago Accord,” after Trump’s private club in Palm Beach, Florida. Much of the attention has focused on a paper by Stephen Miran, Trump’s nominee to lead the White House Council of Economic Advisers.  In it, Miran laid out a road map for reforming the global trading system and fixing economic imbalances driven by “persistent dollar overvaluation.” Before being picked as Treasury secretary, Scott Bessent predicted in June that there would be “some kind of grand economic reordering” in the coming years. Trump has promised to deliver a golden age that will include a renaissance for American manufacturing and exports. He also has longstanding concerns about the size of the US trade deficit, which hit a record $1.2 trillion in 2024, caracterizing it as effectively a transfer of wealth abroad. H...

Crack Down on Hedge Funds; financial stability for all is the greater goal

Raise the cost of borrowing securities to curb leverage in repo markets. Bank of England Governor Andrew Bailey to counteract the outsized hedge fund leverage he has repeatedly warned is a growing financial-stability risk. https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2025-02-11/multi-manager-hedge-funds-pose-stability-risk-says-boe-s-bailey Bailey earlier this month in a speech at the University of Chicago Booth School of Business campus in London https://www.bankofengland.co.uk/speech/2025/february/andrew-bailey-keynote-speech-university-of-chicago-booth-school-of-business reiterated the undeniable fact that the footprint of hedge funds and non-bank market makers has grown substantially in recent years. The real solution is to hit leveraged players in the pocket by requiring the banks that facilitate them to impose greater "haircuts" (a risk charge) on gilt repo financing. https://www.ecb.europa.eu/ecb-and-you/explainers/tell-me-more/html/haircuts.en.html Bank profits may suffer...

It is the dollar-based global financial system that is the real source of America’s hegemonic power

Washington plans to defend the dollar Four years ago BIS unveiled an innovation project aimed to create a cross-border central bank digital currency linking the central banks of China, Hong Kong, Thailand, UAE and (latterly) Saudi Arabia. Just before the US election, the BIS unexpectedly pulled out Trump repeated threats to impose “100% Tariffs” on countries trying to “replace the mighty U.S. Dollar” with new currencies or payments systems. After all (as I have noted before), https://www.ft.com/content/762c39ba-9cd2-4d97-af32-8f6f9f3bafae it is the dollar-based global financial system that is the real source of America’s hegemonic power today, and which Washington wants to defend. Gillian Tett Financial Times 22 February 20 25 https://www.ft.com/content/bfafb8f7-bd1c-48bb-85f4-8ba25475c0a3 US President Donald Trump has threatened BRICS nations with 100% tariffs if they replace the US dollar as reserve currency. The ‘grossly overvalued’ American dollar; about 22 per cent

Bild
Their currency, our problem If you spend enough time on certain corners of certain social media sites, chances are that you’ll see someone point out that Mississippi, the poorest US state, is now richer per capita than the UK or Japan. This is another proof that the dollar is grossly over-valued, inflated in part due to the super-sized fiscal program. Stephen Jen of Eurizon SLJ’s more specific arguments on why fiscal largesse is at the heart of the phenomenon,  and why he estimates that the dollar is about 22 per cent overvalued against other G10 currencies — the most since 2002 If this is true, what might trigger a reversal? Who knows. Bidenomics, MMT, eller vad? Monetary Creation and Destruction del 6

Bild
Why speculators are still running wild when money is no longer free https://englundmacro.blogspot.com/2025/02/why-speculators-are-still-running-wild.html Storföretagen passade på att låna när de kunde göra det nästan gratis.

Bild
Förra året hade den federala staten knappt 7 000 miljarder dollar i utgifter men bara 5 000 miljarder i inkomster.  Under högkonjunktur, alltså. Why speculators are still running wild when money is no longer free

Something even bigger than AI and the Trump effect is at work One answer is that the easy money era ended only in part. It had always rested on a growing web of government and central bank support including market rescues, corporate and bank bailouts, constant stimulus and, of course, record low rates.  Only very low rates have gone away. The rest of the culture continues to backstop the basic faith of market speculators that nothing will be allowed to go wrong. The longer the bull run lasts, the more investors feel emboldened to buy any dip.   The market suffered brief setbacks on news of a serious Chinese challenge to American AI dominance and of Trump’s tariffs.  Then retail investors rushed in to buy stocks like never before.  Of the five biggest days for retail buying this decade, four erupted in the last five weeks. To keep growth alive during the pandemic, the Fed injected massive amounts of liquidity into the system. By some measures a lot of it is still...

Stabiliseringspolitik, Ränta och Finanspolitik - Monetary Creation and Destruction del 4

Bild

Monetary Creation and Destruction del 3

Bild
Banks create deposits when they lend When a bank lends, it create...
