The Italian Grand Prix takes place this weekend at Monza, arguably the most historic venue on the calendar.
Monza has hosted Formula 1 races more times than any other circuit, staging grands prix in all but one year since the inaugural season in 1950.
Ferrari's Giuseppe Farina (nearest the camera), Maserati's Juan Manuel Fangio and Ferrari's Alberto Ascari, on the far side, line up before the start of the 1953 race. These three men shared the first eight Formula 1 world championships.

Europe was already the fastest warming on the planet, with temperatures around 2.5 degrees Celsius warmer than in the preindustrial era, compared with around 1.4 degrees for the Earth as a whole.
Ironically, one reason the region may be warming more quickly is its success in reducing air pollution, thinning the blanket of aerosols that bounce back solar radiation.
This summer took things to a new level.
Europe has long enjoyed relatively mild weather, making things like air conditioning a luxury. Rain was relatively steady, allowing agriculture to be far less reliant on irrigation, especially in central and northern Europe.
That’s now changing, and it’s changing fast.

What’s really spooking financial markets is that recent polling suggests the second round of the French presidential election in May will be a Le Pen-Mélenchon run-off.
Within budget and not too late
Tanzania has become a power-surplus nation with the opening of the Julius Nyerere Hydropower project, which has doubled domestic generation capacity.
The project was paid for out of the national budget, with a cost of $2.9 billion, and was completed largely within budget and not too late.
The Tanzanian government funded the project almost entirely by itself, without relying on Western funding or Chinese debt, and selected an Egyptian consortium to build the dam.
Polls suggest the AfD is poised to win the state legislature election in Saxony-Anhalt, one of the poorest German states, with more than 40% of the vote. Merz’s Christian Democratic Union, which has governed Saxony-Anhalt for more than two decades, is trailing at about 20% support.
Merz, whose approval ratings are the lowest ever for a postwar German chancellor, is partly blamed for his party’s weakness in the state.
He’ll make his first campaign appearance in Saxony-Anhalt on Monday alongside CDU state premier Sven Schulze, who has sought to keep Merz at a distance.

The US and Iran exchanged strikes as American forces hit Iranian rocket launchers and Iran responded by firing missiles toward Jordan.
Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps launched a missile-and-drone attack on US air bases in Jordan in retaliation for the American airstrike, but Jordan's military intercepted the missiles.
Brent crude climbed 2.4% to above $90 a barrel.

The US 10-year yield topped 4.75% on Monday for the first time since January 2025 as rising oil prices bolstered expectations that the Federal Reserve will hike interest rates.
The selloff extended to other tenors, with five-year yields also hitting their highest level since early last year and 30-year yields exceeding last week’s highs.

Will anybody use AI as much as coders?
To justify their colossal outlays on data centres, America’s cloud giants, and AI labs such as Anthropic and OpenAI, need adoption of the technology to continue spreading rapidly.
A back-of-the-envelope calculation by The Economist finds that covering the cost of the data-centre build-out will require total annual revenue from the use of AI to reach $2.5trn per year by the end of the decade, up from around $150bn currently.
