Energy Price Shock Hit Europe?

Solar-power generation is setting fresh records across multiple markets on the continent, sending short-term electricity prices below zero on many weekends. 

In sunny Spain the average short-term electricity price, known as the “day ahead,” plunged to just 18 cents on Mar. 28, its lowest point in more than a decade. 

In Germany prices have plunged to negative values in recent days. Back in 2022 they were more than €200 per MWh.

Europe’s investment in power grids is paying off. This time the infrastructure is coping much better thanks to billions of euros of new investments.

Measured by the one-year-forward contract, German benchmark power prices are just 4% higher than their 2025 average. Compared with 2022, they’re down more than 90%. 

Yes, there is an oil shock: Jet fuel shows that. 

An all-encompassing energy shock? Not so much.

Cognitive blind spots are undermining our ability to see the world as it is, rather than as we would like it to be. At the start of the 21st century, western elites generally assumed that globalisation, democracy and the free market were self-evidently good, and would keep spreading, creating peace. N o longer.  FIS, Swiss Federal Intelligence Service, has published a manual about cognitive blind spots. 18 different cognitive biases that hamper our thinking, such as “group think” (adhering to the cosy assumptions of our tribe), “anchoring” (relying exclusively on whatever information we see first, say on social media),  “confirmation bias” (only seeing data that reinforces pre-existing views),  “mirror imaging” (assuming others think like us),  “absence of evidence” bias (failing to think about the data we lack)  and “survivorship bias” (judging data only with success stories, not failures).
