Oil prices are surging on an Iranian media report that a U.S. Navy vessel was struck by missiles, hours after President Trump announced a plan to guide commercial ships out of the Strait of Hormuz.
A U.S. Central Command spokesperson denied the report.
The Fight for the Strait of Hormuz Is Under Way
After weeks of drift and wishful thinking, the United States appears to have begun the effort to reopen one of the world’s most critical shipping lanes.
Intense Iranian retaliation on Monday, including strikes on the United Arab Emirates and attacks targeting the U.S. Navy and shipping in the strait, suggests that this effort may come at the cost of ending the tenuous ceasefire in place since April 7.
But it will be worth it—the current stalemate was economically untenable in the long run.
According to the president, efforts to interfere with this “humanitarian” mission will be “dealt with forcefully.”
Central Command followed up with its own statement, asserting that the “defensive mission” would be supported by “guided-missile destroyers, over 100 land and sea-based aircraft, multi-domain unmanned platforms, and 15,000 service members.”
Strait of Hormuz: The fragile ceasefire between the US and Iran that has held for nearly a month is being tested after both sides fired shots in the Strait of Hormuz.
The US military “blew up” six Iranian boats Monday after Tehran launched “multiple cruise missiles, drones and small boats” at American Navy ships and commercial vessels, US Central Command said.
