Artificial intelligence is advancing at a stunning, and perhaps uncontrolled speed.
Last week, Evan Hubinger, the Alignment Science Lead at the AI company Anthropic estimated a greater than 10% chance that AI could eliminate humanity within a decade,
adding “I believe Anthropic is trying its best, but we do not yet have a plan to solve alignment for superintelligence and are not clearly on track to.”
Can we teach artificial intelligence not simply to pursue objectives, but to look deeply enough to act with compassion, and even wisdom?
OpenAI shared several undisclosed incidents of its AI models misbehaving and unveiled a new framework for tracking and disclosing such occurrences going forward.
While politicians debate, the Ai-models will evolve.
Another top scientist at the firm put the probability of extinction at more than 10%. Americans eight in ten say they support regulation, even if it slows down innovation.
The trickier question is what that regulation should be.

The AI Panic
The Mainstream Media has finally caught up with The Watchtower, the Jehovah’s Witnesses signature publication, and turned the spotlight on the end of the world.
I’m not qualified to judge whether the 10% figure makes any sense. Some AI scientists think that it is hysterical nonsense; others that, even if it is on the high side, there is still a chance of Armageddon.
It strikes me, as a mere scribbler, that, even if there is only a 1% chance of the total destruction of mankind, we ought to put on the brakes.
The leading merchant of Armageddon is Peter Thiel, a Stanford University graduate, chess prodigy, and a venture capitalist with a fortune of some $35 billion.
A surprising number of Silicon Valley residents share his disposition to think about technology, particularly AI, in messianic terms.
Their world is divided, if not between saints and sinners, then between high-IQ types who understand the power of technology and regular people who don’t.
Nor is Thiel the most extreme of the prophets.

Mercor counts OpenAI and Anthropic among its customers. All three co-founders dropped out a few years into college to start Mercor.
Soon after leaving school, they became Thiel Fellows, a program created by venture investor Peter Thiel that funds companies started by college dropouts.

King Charles Calls on Nvidia, OpenAI Chiefs to Control AI
Britain’s monarch plans to ask some of the most critical figures in artificial intelligence for reassurances the technologists can keep their inventions under control.
Nvidia Corp. Chief Executive Officer Jensen Huang, OpenAI’s Chief Financial Officer Sarah Friar and Google DeepMind co-founder Demis Hassabis will attend an event convened by King Charles III in Scotland on Thursday.
