Warsh might yet be a good Fed chair.

After his speech at the Jackson Hole Symposium, I am less pessimistic about the prospect than before. Difficult choices — difficult intellectually and politically — lie ahead. 

But his speech “In our time” was both clear and sensible — clear on the objectives of policy and sensible on how the Fed should conduct itself.

An economy is not a machine, to be manipulated by wise technocrats in accordance with predictable rules.

In addition, forward guidance creates a “hall-of-mirrors”: the central bank sees in markets not independent judgments 

but an image of its own statements, as participants shift from investing in their own judgment to following the Fed’s forecasts of what it will do.

The US military struck five Iranian tankers on Tuesday, sinking one, after Iran fired ballistic missiles at a US Navy warship, in a fresh escalation of fighting in the Middle East.

The attacks prompted a significant retaliation from Iran, which launched a missile barrage toward regional US ally Jordan, saying it was targeting US military assets.

Four crude oil carriers in the Gulf of Oman and one near Kharg Island –– a hub for Iranian oil exports in the Persian Gulf –– were struck on Tuesday, US Central Command (CENTCOM) said.

Upptrappningen av Irankriget får nu ytterligare konsekvenser för oljemarknaden. Detta efter beskedet att Iran avfyrat robotar mot amerikanska krigsfartyg som vedergällning för att USA förstört fem iranska oljetankrar.

Stock markets are not only ignoring the obvious threats, but seem imbued with extreme optimism.
