For Iraq's government in Baghdad, September 30, 2026, marks the end of an era. "October 1 will be a new day in the course of the Iraqi state, with the country free of any foreign military presence and the completion of national sovereignty over its territory," Iraq's Prime Minister Ali al-Zaidi said in a statement.

By Wednesday, the United States will have completed the withdrawal of its remaining 2,500 troops from Iraqi territory according to a 2024 agreement. 

Their departure concludes 12 years of the US-led Operation Inherent Resolve mission against the Islamic State group, or ISIS, which at the time was advancing across the country and in neighboring Syria.

Donald Trump sa redan för tio år sedan att Irakkriget låg bakom flyktingvågen som ledde till ”Europas förstörelse”.

I USA:s nya säkerhetspolitiska strategi står det att Europa hotas av ”civilisatorisk utplåning”. Ett viktigt skäl är den europeiska migrationspolitiken ”som förändrar kontinenten”.

I en utfrågning inför publik tidigt 2016 – när han kampanjade för att bli presidentkandidat – fick Trump frågor om sin kritik mot Irakkriget.

”Det kan ha varit det värsta beslutet – att gå in i Irak kan ha varit det värsta beslutet någon har fattat, någon president har fattat i landets historia. Så illa är det, okej” sa Trump.

Han talade om den pågående flyktingvågen och sa att den leder till ”Europas förstörelse” och han pekade på Tyskland, Sverige och Belgien: ”Så galet vad de har gjort.”

Ur Trumps perspektiv är skulden delad: USA:s krig lade grunden för flyktingvågen, och en del länder stod inte emot den. Han nämnde Sverige och Tyskland, två länder som då stod för den mest liberala flyktingpolitiken i EU.

Cognitive blind spots are undermining our ability to see the world as it is, rather than as we would like it to be.
