Franklin D. Roosevelt

By 1945 the British had painfully discovered that while Tommies and GIs were fighting side-by-side against the Germans and Japanese, back home the Roosevelt administration was striking some very harsh bargains with beleaguered Britain.

Churchill’s nation was obliged to sell its entire foreign assets to American corporations at fire-sale prices, to pay for arms.

Montagu Norman, governor of the Bank of England, wrote in March 1941:

“I have never realized so strongly as now how entirely we are in the hands of American ‘friends’ over direct investments, and how much it looks as if, with kind words and feelings, they were going to extract these one after another.”

Had the Democrats not dumped Wallace in 1944 for Harry Truman, history might have turned out quite differently

The World That Wasn’t - Henry Wallace

Now, based on striking new finds from Russian, FBI, and other archives, Benn Steil’s The World That Wasn’t paints a decidedly less heroic portrait of the man, of the events surrounding his fall, and of the world that might have been under his presidency.

The Glass-Steagall regulations separating investment and commercial banks were introduced by Franklin Roosevelt in 1933, repealed by Bill Clinton in 1999,

partially reintroduced in the 2010 Dodd-Frank Act that  followed the 2008 Lehman Brothers meltdown.
