Poland cools on joining Eurozone after its economy surges

Finance minister says the country’s performance is clearly better than most of those in the single currency

Since Tusk won parliamentary elections in October 2023 at the helm of a pro-EU coalition, the zloty has gained against the euro and opinion polls have consistently shown a majority of voters opposed to the euro.

Relations between Poland’s government and the central bank have stabilised, Domański said, signalling an easing of tensions after Tusk threatened in 2023 to bring the bank’s governor before a state tribunal.

Tusk had accused Adam Glapiński, a PiS ally, of mismanaging the National Bank of Poland and politicising monetary policy. 

Glapiński has denied wrongdoing and appealed to the ECB over what he called an unlawful attempt to curtail his second term, which runs until 2028.

Cognitive blind spots

Cognitive blind spots are undermining our ability to see the world as it is, rather than as we would like it to be. At the start of the 21st century, western elites generally assumed that globalisation, democracy and the free market were self-evidently good, and would keep spreading, creating peace. N o longer.  FIS, Swiss Federal Intelligence Service, has published a manual about cognitive blind spots. 18 different cognitive biases that hamper our thinking, such as “group think” (adhering to the cosy assumptions of our tribe), “anchoring” (relying exclusively on whatever information we see first, say on social media),  “confirmation bias” (only seeing data that reinforces pre-existing views),  “mirror imaging” (assuming others think like us),  “absence of evidence” bias (failing to think about the data we lack)  and “survivorship bias” (judging data only with success stories, not failures).
