Mark Carney brilliant speech on the end of the old order

And options for “middle powers”. Europe has a key role to play in building a successor to the US-led global order

Carney began by citing an essay by Václav Havel, writer, dissident and first president of post-communist Czechoslovakia. In this Havel argued that communism sustained itself, in Carney’s words, “through the participation of ordinary people in rituals they privately know to be false”.

 The more one looks at what lies ahead, the more important, as my colleague Martin Sandbu argues, becomes the EU — in Trump’s eyes, the greatest enemy. 

With every passing day, the EU is having more greatness thrust upon it, in all domains.

Across the political spectrum, politicians are uniting in the face of an ally’s betrayal.
The threat from the Trump administration is more unsettling/than waging war on Ukraine, Russian President Vladimir Putin threatens Europe’s security/; it is an assault on Europe’s identity, coming from its own ally. 
This is unprecedented. To make things worse, by weakening the alliance, Trump heightens the security risk posed by Russia and increases China’s appetite.
Gradually and then suddenly last week, the transatlantic alliance seemed to founder in the worst crisis of its existence. 
Around dinner tables on this side of the ocean, people hold surreal conversations about what form of fascism America is descending into

Cognitive blind spots are undermining our ability to see the world as it is, rather than as we would like it to be. At the start of the 21st century, western elites generally assumed that globalisation, democracy and the free market were self-evidently good, and would keep spreading, creating peace. N o longer.  FIS, Swiss Federal Intelligence Service, has published a manual about cognitive blind spots. 18 different cognitive biases that hamper our thinking, such as “group think” (adhering to the cosy assumptions of our tribe), “anchoring” (relying exclusively on whatever information we see first, say on social media),  “confirmation bias” (only seeing data that reinforces pre-existing views),  “mirror imaging” (assuming others think like us),  “absence of evidence” bias (failing to think about the data we lack)  and “survivorship bias” (judging data only with success stories, not failures).
