Bessent hånar EU: ”Den fruktade arbetsgruppen”
Enligt Bessent skulle den 27 länder starka unionen snarare bilda ännu en arbetsgrupp än att snabbt ta till sitt mest kraftfulla handelspolitiska verktyg, det så kallade antitvångsinstrumentet, som kan användas för att begränsa amerikanska företags tillgång till EU:s inre marknad.

På frågan om USA är öppet för en förhandlad lösning som inte innebär att ta kontroll över Grönland svarade Bessent med att han tills vidare skulle ta president Trump på orden.

The US Treasury secretary has dismissed the EU’s ability to quickly agree a forceful response to Donald Trump’s Greenland-related tariffs, predicting the bloc would likely form “the dreaded European working group” rather than take rapid action.
“As someone who was a professor of economic history at Yale I can tell you the [countries with a trade surplus] always get hit the worst in a trade war.”

On his Truth Social platform on Tuesday, Trump wrote: “I had a very good telephone call with Mark Rutte, the Secretary General of Nato, concerning Greenland.”
He added that he had “agreed to a meeting of the various parties in Davos, Switzerland”.
“As I expressed to everyone, very plainly, Greenland is imperative for National and World security. There can be no going back,” he wrote.

European countries hold trillions of dollars of US bonds and stocks, some of which sit with public sector funds. That’s fueling speculation they may offload their holdings in response to Trump’s renewed tariff war, potentially driving borrowing costs up and equities down given US reliance on foreign capital.
