ECB President Christine Lagarde praised Germany for opening its purse strings

ECB President Christine Lagarde praised Germany for opening its purse strings and using its balance sheet and capacity to borrow.

International Monetary Fund Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva also praised Germany, saying it is demonstrating that imbalances can be addressed with political will.

New Chancellor Friedrich Merz pushed through a landmark spending bill even before taking office, unleashing the power of the federal balance sheet to transform Germany’s military and revamp its infrastructure.

“Agent of change Germany — who would have thought?” Lagarde said.

Germany's outgoing parliament convenes in a special session to discuss reforming the country's debt brake.
