How to end the war in Iran
If they are not to return to a futile war, America and Iran will have to ensure the ceasefire produces a lasting peace, by opening the strait and settling their dispute over Iran’s nuclear programme.
The first stage is reopening the strait, which should be possible for Iran and America to agree on—after all, each side knows it could force closure again.
The second stage will be about Iran’s nuclear programme. The outlines of a deal are simple here, too: Iran must close off its path to a nuclear weapon in return for more sanctions relief.
Unfortunately, everything about the details will be tricky.

As soon as the first day of the war, when Iran retaliated against unprovoked American and Israeli strikes by targeting civilian infrastructure around the Gulf, the battlefield of this conflict looked different.
It didn’t take long for Iran to deploy its “Hormuz weapon,” attacking civilian energy infrastructure and attacking commercial oil tankers and mining the strait and taking the world’s fossil-fuel economy hostage.
But just as striking was the simple math of munitions.
American and Israeli forces were destroying quite a lot of Iranian targets, both military and civilian. But they were doing so with extremely expensive weaponry and depleting fragile stockpiles.
Perhaps the Iranians were doing less damage, but they were doing it much more cheaply, with what seemed like a bountiful supply of low-cost drones, missiles and mines.

A decade into the age of nationalism, the idea of quitting the club is still remarkably taboo. In an era of ardent nationalism, this supranational club should be fighting for its life. It isn’t really.
Few things are stranger about modern politics.
It is hard to ascribe it to great feats of leadership and administration from Brussels.
There is such a thing as an anti-elite pro-European.
It is possible to support Brussels on the basis that one’s own national governing class is more inept, self-dealing and high-handed.

We used to have a clear idea of where modernity was heading
—toward greater autonomy and equality, secularism, stronger individual rights, cultural openness, and liberal democracy.
Progress was supposed to lead to the expansion of individual choice in sphere after sphere. Science and reason would prosper while superstition and conspiracy-mongering would wither away.
Maybe you’ve seen photos of Tehran in the 1970s, just before the Islamic Revolution: images of young women going to work in miniskirts, of couples making out in parks while wearing bell-bottoms, of people at pools in bikinis.
It looks like Paris or Milan or Los Angeles. But in 1979 the revolution happened, and now Tehran looks like something from an earlier century.
But civilizations turn back the clock all the time. The Italian Renaissance can be seen as a concerted artistic and intellectual effort to return to classical Greek and Roman times.
Today billions of people have lost that faith in progress as a source of meaning and are flocking to its opposite. In the 21st century, traditionalism has emerged as a catalytic school of thought.
You can tell what kind of reactionary a person is by asking them what era they want to go back to.
For some MAGA dudes, it’s the Roman empire, when men were men. For some theocrats, it’s the Middle Ages, when men were monks.

Vi har i dag skickat en begäran om att regeringen tillsätter en statlig utredning med uppdrag att lämna förslag som säkerställer långsiktig ekonomisk trygghet för tomträttshavare, med särskilt skydd i områden med snabbt stigande markvärden.
Tomträtten infördes i början av 1900-talet för att möjliggöra för hushåll utan stora ekonomiska resurser att bygga och bo utan att köpa marken. Lagstiftningen är i allt väsentligt oförändrad sedan 1967.
Under tiden har markvärdena i storstäderna skenat.

RE: En lägenhet i Vasastan är så dyr därför att den ligger i Vasastan. Att markvärdena har skenat är ett starkt motiv att höja priset för rätten att bo där.
