Donald Trump has probably done more to unite Europe than any European ever did.

It’s an old tenet of political thought that to build a collective identity you need an enemy. An adversary can force your people to cohere. Hitler played that role for Britain, and the USSR for the US. 

A technocratic economic union without enemies inspired little emotion. Nobody would die for the blue and gold flag, and only a few Ryder Cup ultras ever waved it at a sporting event. 

In TV series and films, the hero fighting geopolitical baddies was almost always an American, not a European.

Europe project requires a distinctly European form of nationalism

Without a collective “we,” taxation feels like extortion, laws are perceived as an imposition by outsiders, and military service becomes difficult to justify. 

Why contribute, comply, or sacrifice if the beneficiaries are not “us”?

Det måste vara besynnerligt för Ulf Kristersson.Antag att du är en svensk statsminister. Att du helst vill åka ut på bussturné i mellanstora mellansvenska städer och prata om alla fantastiska reformer som du har genomfört under snart fyra år.

Alla dessa, mer eller mindre vilda förslag, som Manfred Weber och andra politiker framför nu, handlar om att stärka Europa. I praktiken om att centralisera mer.

Vad är det som har en flagga, en nationaldag, en nationalsång, en militärstyrka, ett parlament och en högsta domstol. 

En stat, naturligtvis. 

Vad är det mer en stat har? Jo, en valuta. Det är därför europas ledande politiker har infört euron.

Cognitive blind spots are undermining our ability to see the world as it is, rather than as we would like it to be. At the start of the 21st century, western elites generally assumed that globalisation, democracy and the free market were self-evidently good, and would keep spreading, creating peace. N o longer.  FIS, Swiss Federal Intelligence Service, has published a manual about cognitive blind spots. 18 different cognitive biases that hamper our thinking, such as “group think” (adhering to the cosy assumptions of our tribe), “anchoring” (relying exclusively on whatever information we see first, say on social media),  “confirmation bias” (only seeing data that reinforces pre-existing views),  “mirror imaging” (assuming others think like us),  “absence of evidence” bias (failing to think about the data we lack)  and “survivorship bias” (judging data only with success stories, not failures).
