Most people don’t realise the extent to which Poland has transformed itself
Amid all the gloom about the UK’s economic performance, there is still one positive worth noting: we are growing faster than our closest competitors on the Continent.
Whereas last year the UK grew by 1.3pc, France, Italy and Germany recorded growth of 0.9pc, 0.7pc and 0.4pc, respectively.
But that’s looking for inspiration from the wrong parts of Europe. If we looked east to Poland, we would see an altogether different picture.
Last year, its economic growth was 3.6pc, and it has become the world’s 20th-largest economy, so it should qualify for the G20.
It is widely known that quite a few Poles have returned home in recent years. But what many British people don’t realise is that some of their compatriots are now also moving to Poland.
In 2015, 41,000 British people were living in Poland. By 2024, this number had risen to 185,000.

After several skirmishes with Russian troops in the blurred border areas, Polish along with some nationalist Ukrainian fighters captured Kyiv in the spring of 1920.

The first wall to fall was torn down in 1980 at the Gdansk shipyards. Polackerna är, med räta, missnöjda med att det är Murens fall som blivit symbolen för kommunismens sammanbrott.
The European Commission has produced a clip for the 20th anniversary of the fall of communism, but it forgot to mention that it all started in Poland.
“Solidarity”, Lech Walesa and the events of 1989 are completely absent. The rare shots from Poland show general Jaruzelski, who introduced martial law in 1981.
