I samband med beskedet uppmanade nationalförrsamlingens president Jorge Rodriguez venezuelanska folket att ”fortsätta denna fredliga väg för att bygga demokratisk samexistens”.

Amnestilagen är kärnan i de reformer som interimspresident Delcy Rodriguez genomfört sedan USA störtade president Nicolas Maduro.

Neoconservatives have long argued that American power should be used unapologetically to defend the liberal order abroad, combining military strength, moral clarity and a willingness to confront authoritarian regimes, regardless of short-term economic or political cost.

Rubio has clearly internalized the notion that there are no sacred cows when working for Trump. It also gave him an office in the West Wing — something no secretary of state has enjoyed since Henry Kissinger and a crucial advantage in an administration helmed by a president notorious for being swayed by the latest good argument.

And with Cuba reeling from its loss of Venezuelan oil, we may see more regional fireworks as we near the 65th anniversary of the disastrous Bay of Pigs operation.

Cognitive blind spots are undermining our ability to see the world as it is, rather than as we would like it to be. At the start of the 21st century, western elites generally assumed that globalisation, democracy and the free market were self-evidently good, and would keep spreading, creating peace. N o longer.  FIS, Swiss Federal Intelligence Service, has published a manual about cognitive blind spots. 18 different cognitive biases that hamper our thinking, such as “group think” (adhering to the cosy assumptions of our tribe), “anchoring” (relying exclusively on whatever information we see first, say on social media),  “confirmation bias” (only seeing data that reinforces pre-existing views),  “mirror imaging” (assuming others think like us),  “absence of evidence” bias (failing to think about the data we lack)  and “survivorship bias” (judging data only with success stories, not failures).
