Biden Sidelined as Israel Reshapes Middle East
Earlier in September, White House envoy Amos Hochstein met with Israeli officials in the Israeli military’s Tel Aviv bunker to urge them not to launch a large-scale operation against Hezbollah in Lebanon.
He implored them to give efforts to broker an agreement that would push Hezbollah back from Israel’s northern border a chance.
Hours after Hochstein’s meeting with Netanyahu, hundreds of pagers used by Hezbollah militants exploded across Lebanon in an unprecedented attack that killed dozens of people, including children, and wounded thousands more.
The following day, bombs in walkie-talkies set off a second wave of explosions.

Widening Mideast Conflict Exposes Limits of US Leverage With Israel
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is escalating his fight against Iran. With the US presidential election a month away, the Biden administration can’t — or won’t — stop him.
In the span of last week, Netanyahu showily rejected a US-French cease-fire proposal for Lebanon. Instead, he ordered the air strike that killed Nasrallah, while keeping the Americans in the dark because of operational secrecy, an Israeli official said.
The US had worked on the plan in earnest, according to four people familiar with its policy, on the assumption that Netanyahu would accept it. Another Israeli official said Israel voiced openness to the initiative, but not agreement, putting the differences down to miscommunication.
