“For those who want this defendant put to death, let me say simply that there can be no exception to principle,” she wrote in an opinion piece published in the San Francisco Chronicle in 2004, shortly after being elected the city’s first female district attorney.

“I gave my word to the people of San Francisco that I oppose the death penalty,” Harris wrote, “and I will honor that commitment despite the strong emotions evoked by this case.”

Just four years later, however, Harris pushed aside her long-held opposition to capital punishment when she announced plans to run for attorney general of California. 

She vowed that, if elected, she would “enforce the death penalty as the law dictates.”

The Lightness of Being Kamala Harris

This week she may have made the biggest mistake of her 81-day campaign in response to similar questions from TV host Stephen Colbert and “The View.” Asked what she would do differently than President Biden, the Vice President said “there is not a thing that comes to mind.”

If Ms. Harris loses, that answer will go far to explaining why. 

Of late she has begun to suggest she’s a moderate by using words like “consensus” and “compromise.”

But there’s not a single issue on which she has stood up to the left of her party. Some Democrats have urged her to find such an issue and run on it. Perhaps endorse charter schools. Or say parents must approve gender transitioning surgery for minors. She won’t do even that.

If you read the Democratic press, which means nearly all of the press, you’ll notice a creeping concern this week that Mr. Trump is gaining in the polls in the battleground states.
