Biden’s sudden betrayal of Israel is a terrible miscalculation




Washington fails to see that even if Netanyahu fell from power, his successors still want to destroy the terrorists

For some weeks his strategy seemed to be to increasingly placate the extreme left of his party while continuing to arm Israel as usual.

Biden switched from saying critical things about Israel while supporting it, to saying nice things about Israel while abandoning it.

Earlier this year the Democrat Senator Chuck Schumer – the most senior Jewish leader in the Democrat party – declared that Benjamin Netanyahu should be removed from office.

It was an extraordinary intervention in Israeli affairs. 

Netanyahu is an elected leader of a democracy. His country’s allies and friends may disagree with him, but it is not normally deemed politic to demand that an ally replace a democratically elected leader.

Biden Is Doing It All Wrong

President Biden appears behind in all the swing states and his campaign appears all-too-focused on firming up his political base on the left with his new shift on Israel, a $7 trillion budget, massive tax increases and failing to connect on the basic issues of inflation, immigration and energy. 

By pitching too much to the base, he is leaving behind the centrist swing voters who shift between parties from election to election and, I believe, will be the key factor deciding the 2024 race.

Mr. Biden’s campaign has fundamentally miscalculated on Israel. Those Haley voters are strong defense voters who would back ally Israel unreservedly and I believe want to see a president who would be putting maximum pressure on Hamas to release hostages.

Cognitive blind spots are undermining our ability to see the world as it is, rather than as we would like it to be. At the start of the 21st century, western elites generally assumed that globalisation, democracy and the free market were self-evidently good, and would keep spreading, creating peace. N o longer.  FIS, Swiss Federal Intelligence Service, has published a manual about cognitive blind spots. 18 different cognitive biases that hamper our thinking, such as “group think” (adhering to the cosy assumptions of our tribe), “anchoring” (relying exclusively on whatever information we see first, say on social media),  “confirmation bias” (only seeing data that reinforces pre-existing views),  “mirror imaging” (assuming others think like us),  “absence of evidence” bias (failing to think about the data we lack)  and “survivorship bias” (judging data only with success stories, not failures).
