Donald Trump said he expected “loyalty” from Nato allies, as he railed against the military alliance for not being faster to assist in the US-Israeli war against Iran. 

Trump was disappointed with Italy, France, Germany and the UK, and acknowledged Sir Keir Starmer’s recent resignation as British prime minister. “He’s now gone,” Trump said.

Iran is not Nato territory, the US chose not to consult European allies and could not seriously have expected Europeans to join them in what they saw as reckless adventurism.

But within the US administration, the frustration and grievance is real, and even extends beyond Maga into conservative foreign policy circles.

Europeans did not have to join us, but they could at least stand with us. How is refusing base usage not a breach of solidarity and loyalty?

From the perspective of the Trump administration, Europe’s original sin was to abandon the US in a moment of consequence and expose the alliance as hollow.

But for Europeans, the critical betrayal was Greenland.

Cognitive blind spots are undermining our ability to see the world as it is, rather than as we would like it to be. At the start of the 21st century, western elites generally assumed that globalisation, democracy and the free market were self-evidently good, and would keep spreading, creating peace. N o longer.  FIS, Swiss Federal Intelligence Service, has published a manual about cognitive blind spots. 18 different cognitive biases that hamper our thinking, such as “group think” (adhering to the cosy assumptions of our tribe), “anchoring” (relying exclusively on whatever information we see first, say on social media),  “confirmation bias” (only seeing data that reinforces pre-existing views),  “mirror imaging” (assuming others think like us),  “absence of evidence” bias (failing to think about the data we lack)  and “survivorship bias” (judging data only with success stories, not failures).
