Double, Double Toil and Bubble Trouble

So is this the moment the bubble bursts? Probably not, but it’s a mighty interesting juncture.

The spark that lit the flame appears to have come from Korea. SK Hynix Inc. — another freshly minted trillion-dollar chipmaker — had nothing significant to announce.

What market people call the technicals — the waves of mass psychology that show up in charts, and which plainly show that we reached the point of over-excitement a while ago.

The risk is that trading activity could feed on itself. People have started holding leveraged exchange-traded funds that hold only one or two companies, and they’re very popular.  Offers to double each day’s returns, positive or negative.

Good news: So far, this isn’t even a correction. Worse news: That leaves much space for over-levered investors to suffer losses that they cannot afford.

Shakespeare’s Macbeth: the original line is “Double, double toil and trouble; / Fire burn and caldron bubble.”

The phrase is from Act IV, Scene 1 of Macbeth, in the scene where the three witches stand around a boiling cauldron and chant a spell. Their refrain, repeated several times, is:

Double, double toil and trouble;

Fire burn and caldron bubble.

Tuesday’s stock-market slide was what one Wall Street strategist called a “chip-wreck.”

The Philadelphia Semiconductor Index to an 7.9% plunge. All 30 members of the closely followed gauge dropped.

The drop pulled the S&P 500 down 1.4% because it was offset in part by defensive sectors like consumer staples and real estate.

The long-term sustainability of the AI boom is uncertain
Concerns that the current reliance on a single community of users, primarily for coding, may not be enough to justify the huge valuations of AI labs like OpenAI and Anthropic.

Martin Wolf: The Declaration of Independence proclaimed liberation from tyrants. Donald Trump wants to be one.

“From the Arab Gulf states’ perspective, the Iran war is a disastrous turning point for the regional security order,” said Hasan Alhasan, senior fellow at the International Institute for Strategic Studies (IISS), who sees the agreement as part of a broader US retrenchment from the region.
“US disengagement from the Gulf and the flow of financial and economic resources to Iran are likely to embolden Tehran further.”
“Nonetheless, the Arab Gulf states have facilitated and supported the Iran-US ceasefire deal. For them, a bad deal is still preferable to war,”

Donald Trump gambles that Iran wants money more than power. The peace deal is all carrot and no stick.

The regime has an unprecedented opportunity to trade nukes for cash and investment. Unlike previous presidents, Mr Trump doesn’t care about democracy. Having weaponised the strait, Iran may now see less value in nuclear bombs.
The regime is unpopular at home: it could use the money.
