It is a systemically important financial institution according to the Financial Stability Board, and is considered one of the "Big Four Banks" in the United States, alongside JPMorgan Chase, Bank of America, and Citigroup.
Buying the dip has been especially successful for traders 2025.
After a 2% or more one-day drop in 2025, stocks were higher one week later over 85% of the time, compared to a 58% historical average.
The S&P 500 bottomed in March 2009 after a decline of more than 50% from a peak reached in late 2007.
By stepping in with a powerful policy prescription to boost both markets and the economy, the Federal Reserve had signaled to investors that it had their backs.
This perception that the Fed would quickly step in if any real trouble arose emboldened a generation of investors who seized every chance to buy stocks at what felt like a discount.
