Policymakers could leave their 2% target in place formally, but be all right with never quite getting there.

Sensors have recorded temperatures of 1,100C in the convection firestorms of the French Gironde, hot enough to create pyrocumulonimbus conditions that generate their own wind systems.

French firefighters say the furnace is throwing burning embers for several hundred metres like mortar fire. It is all too like the firebombing of Hamburg, Dresden or Tokyo in the Second World War.

What can be more conservative than Edmund Burke’s contract of eternal society? It entails a moral duty to pass on the world we have inherited, “a partnership not only between those who are living, but between those who are living, those who are dead and those who are to be born”.

The proper course for market conservatives is to outcompete fossil fuels by embracing cheaper and better technologies – which now exist. It is to execute the task more competently by using price signals, with a pro-growth bias and broad popular consent.

Wall Street banks have demanded more collateral from hedge funds in recent weeks as a rout in AI stocks accelerates and triggers heavy losses across several popular strategies.

Banks asked funds whose holdings are heavily concentrated in certain industries to provide additional collateral to keep their existing levels of leverage.

 Many of these calls for additional collateral were automatically triggered by the market volatility, something that is generally included in agreements between funds and banks.

Stock markets are not only ignoring the obvious threats, but seem imbued with extreme optimism. In the autumn of 1929, Irving Fisher, one of the greatest American economists, stated: “Stock prices have reached what looks like a permanently high plateau.”  This turned out to be one of the most incorrect forecasts ever made: in short order, US and global stock markets were hit by the Great Crash, which was followed by the Great Depression. Maybe markets were in some sense “right” before the crash and wrong after it. But who cared?
