The tariffs are a substantial new source of revenue for the federal government


Over time, analysts expect that the tariffs, if left in place, could be worth more than $2 trillion in additional revenue over the next decade. 

Economists overwhelmingly hope that doesn’t happen and the United States abandons the new trade barriers. But some acknowledge that such a substantial stream of revenue could end up being hard to quit.

 “We have so much money coming in, we’re thinking about a little rebate, but the big thing we want to do is pay down debt,” Mr. Trump said last month of the tariffs.

Förra året hade den federala staten knappt 7 000 miljarder dollar i utgifter men bara 5 000 miljarder i inkomster. Under högkonjunktur, alltså.

Det är klart att tillväxten blir hög.

The US economy grew throughout, yet nobody found a way to redeploy the people impoverished by globalization. 

That wasn’t inevitable, and can’t be fixed by blocking off imports. 

The government might have intervened to stop inequality reaching this point, most logically with the traditional left-wing remedy of redistributive taxation. 

That’s a complete no-no in contemporary US political culture
