Germany and Spain’s defense ministers
say they are pressing to swiftly resolve disputes over the FCAS fighter jet program and move into the next development phase this fall.
German Chancellor Friedrich Merz on Wednesday announced a delay in deciding whether to continue the project, pointing to French company Dassault Aviation, which has sought to expand its role alongside partners Airbus and Indra Sistemas.
The sixth-generation fighter is slated to become operational around 2040; the rival Global Combat Air Programme led by the UK, Italy and Japan, which involves BAE Systems, Leonardo and Mitsubishi, is aiming for a flying prototype in 2030.
