Gordon Brown text

Gordon Brown has described his failure to rally the nation round the “necessary fiscal stimulus” following the financial crisis as one of the biggest regrets of his time in office.

In a new book set to be published next week, the former Labour prime minister expressed dismay over his inability to convince the public that progressive policies “were the right and fairest way to respond” to the global recession.

“Taming globalisation and redirecting it to meet the interests of working people has been, and still is, the defining political challenge of our era.”

The US economy grew throughout, yet nobody found a way to redeploy the people impoverished by globalization.

That wasn’t inevitable, and can’t be fixed by blocking off imports.

The government might have intervened to stop inequality reaching this point, most logically with the traditional left-wing remedy of redistributive taxation.
