Europe is sleepwalking into a deeper mess rather than rising to the occasion.

Aside from the unpredictability of the White House’s current occupant, some will argue the problem lies on the upper floors of the European Commission headquarters, where an opaque and control-freakish approach to trade policy

Commission President Ursula von der Leyen’s right-hand man, Bjoern Seibert, is the ultimate behind-the-scenes Brussels power broker.

Ursula von der Leyen shuns the media, favors social media posts to position herself as the embodiment of Europe while avoiding critical questions.

Her communications advisor, Jens Flosdorff, and her chief of staff, Björn Seibert, maintain tight relationships with a select group of German and English-speaking journalists, making sure her messages are relayed. 

The rest of the press is simply left out.
