Tthrough September, the total container volume coming into and leaving the nation has increased by nearly 22% from one year ago, and over 16% from 2019.
This amount of container traffic, as measured by twenty-foot equivalent units, or TEUs, is unprecedented. It is being propelled by the volume of imported containers coming into the United States, which have increased by 25% from 2020 and nearly 20% from two years ago.
Many of the containers are being sent back empty.
