France will not agree budget by year-end

French Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu said his government would not be able to get the 2026 budget adopted by the end of the year, after talks between parliamentary negotiators collapsed on Friday.

Lecornu will also be unable to reduce France’s deficit and bring it towards less than 3 per cent of GDP by 2029, a key demand of the European Commission. 

Lecornu had proposed measures that would reduce the deficit to under 5 per cent of GDP in 2026.
