Nej, ta ut pengarna i tid.

- Europe’s leaders have led their electorates into the most ghastly mess, and still they can’t admit it, skrev Jeremy Warner häromdagen .

So far so good.

- Berlin has a bottom-line, non-negotiable position on which it will not budge.  This is that the eurozone is not about to become a permanent transfer union – not now, not ever.  Det skrev Jeremy Warner i Telegraph 14 February 2015 - Europe’s leaders have led their electorates into the most ghastly mess, and still they can’t admit it.  - If they don’t end up guillotined for their stubbornness, metaphorically at least, I for one will be very surprised. Ms Merkel does not say “no” to eurozone bonds. She says: “Not without treaty change.”

The banks in Greece will not open on Monday, I guess

ECB; expansion of so-called Emergency Liquidity Assistance by about 5 billion euros to Greece on Thursday Bloomberg, Friday 13th 2015 The fact that both /ECB and Greece/ threaten euro destruction is testament to the astonishing mis-construction of the euro itself. Peter Doyle, an economist and former IMF staffer, FT 10 February 2015 The game is up. It’s time for Greece to leave the eurozone and move on The stand-off between Greece and the rest of the eurozone will escalate, neither side will blink and the country will default Allister Heath, Telegraph 29 Jan 2015

Ha, Ha, Grekland har ingen sedelpress.

- If there is not an agreement within two weeks to extend the current bailout then Greece will not be eligible for a €7bn loan and, shortly after, will run out of money.

Lysande Peter Doyle, former IMF staffer, argues that much more is at stake in the eurozone.

Deadly euro dances A standoff continues between Greece and its creditors. Peter Doyle, an economist and former IMF staffer, argues that much more is at stake in the eurozone. FT blog 10 February 2015 The last time that push came to shove on this, in 2012, as the markets, Syriza, and the ECB all now know, she /Ms Merkel/ blinked and we got “whatever it takes” and OMT.  Back then, her Minister of Finance, Mr Schäuble, had overtly led the charge to be done with it and to push Greece out.  She wavered, during which time markets across the eurozone- and world-wide boiled. But partly (largely?) as a result of their boiling, she was persuaded that Germany could not be insulated from the bedlam that would follow Grexit. So she overruled him.  And Varoufakis smiled at him during their press conference last week in Berlin. Full text “How did you go bankrupt?” Bill asked. “Two ways,” Mike said. “Gradually and then suddenly.” The dialogue above is from Ernest...

Analysts said the ECB statement was a sign the meeting had not been a success.

ECB has effectively just given a green light for Greek bank runs A negotiating move to let Greece see just what kind of chaos this will create ahead of the big D-Day on Feb 25th when ELA could be withdrawn ? Earlier on Wednesday, Greek Finance Minister Yanis Varoufakis, met the ECB's president Mario Draghi to discuss the country's bailout. Spänningen är olidlig. Kommer ECB att knäcka de grekiska bankerna? Ambrose vs. Peston

The biggest threat is that the European Central Bank ceases to fund Greece's banks. ECB may well feel obliged to turn off the tap, since right now it is only financing those banks because the country is officially complying with the terms of its IMF and eurozone bailout. The moment that Greece was deemed not to be in compliance, it is difficult to see how the ECB could continue to provide emergency liquidity assistance to Greek banks. Robert Peston, BBC economics editor, 2 February 2015 A central bank that is supposed to be the lender of last resort and guardian of financial stability would be taking a deliberate and calculated decision to destroy the Greek banking system.  In reality, the ECB cannot easily act on this threat.  They do not have the political authority or unanimous support to do so, and historians would tar and feather them if they did.  Ambrose Evans-Pritchard 2 Feb 2015 Read more here

Martin Wolf: The idea that the Greeks will run large fiscal surpluses for a generation, to pay back money creditor governments used to rescue private lenders from their folly is a delusion.

The idea that the Greeks will run large fiscal surpluses for a generation, to pay back money creditor governments used to rescue private lenders from their folly is a delusion. The loans supplied by the eurozone and IMF amount to the huge sum of €226.7bn But this went overwhelmingly not to benefiting Greeks but to avoiding the writedown of bad loans to the Greek government and Greek banks.  Just 11 per cent of the loans directly financed government activities. Creditors have a moral responsibility to lend wisely. If they fail to do due diligence on their borrowers, they deserve what is going to happen.  In the case of Greece, the scale of the external deficits, in particular, were obvious. So, too, was the way the Greek state was run. Martin Wolf, FT January 27, 2015

- Levelling out competitiveness in the euro area will be costly Greece must lower its real exchange rate, by cutting prices and wages. This is proving a painful process.

Hon lär ha yttrat det bevingade uttrycket "Après nous le déluge" (Efter oss syndafloden). http://sv.wikipedia.org/wiki/Madame_de_Pompadour Mario Draghi/ECB http://www.nejtillemu.com/draghi.htm Just before leaving the Fed this year, Mr Bernanke was asked if he was confident in advance that QE – the policy of buying bonds to drive down long-term interest rates when short-term rates are already at zero – would do the job.  Mr Bernanke replied: “The problem with QE is it works in practice, but it doesn’t work in theo...

Citigroup chairman Chuck Prince and ABBA: Dance While The Music Still Goes On

“So long as the music is playing, you’ve got to keep dancing. We’re still dancing.”  Chuck Prince, former chairman and chief executive of Citigroup, interviewed only a month before the music stopped 2007.  A few weeks later he was out of a job.   Dance (While The Music Still Goes On) - Abba

Draghi would like his trillion euros to go to Italian factories to re-equip themselves, to Greek tourist resorts to smarten themselves up, and to German consumers to spend more on that Italian-made stuff and those Greek holidays.  But banks won’t want to lend to Italian or Greek companies just because they have a lot more money on their balance sheet.  So if a trillion euros get printed in Frankfurt, a lot of it will wash its way across the English Channel. Matthew Lynn, Telegaph 19 Jan 2015 Economists will no doubt be debating the effectiveness of QE for a couple of generations at least.  Yet one thing we know for sure is that when a major central bank prints money, it floods the rest of the world.  When Japan started, it fuelled asset booms in the US and Europe. When the Fed and the Bank of England launched QE, much of the money poured into the emerging markets. In a world where capital is mobile, and there are no controls on its movement, tha...
