Von der Leyen flagged threats to EU sovereignty

 


European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen told lawmakers that "Europe must fight" for its place in the world and to reestablish its geopolitical relevance.

Von der Leyen flagged threats to EU sovereignty, including Russia's war in Ukraine and the bloc's current defense situation, and called for the EU to bolster its defense capabilities.

The EU will put on hold some bilateral payments to Israel and propose sanctions on extremist ministers and violent settlers, and von der Leyen also announced plans to support Ukraine and strengthen the EU's defense and security.
