Porsche Tried to Be Both Ferrari and Mercedes.

Porsche has become an SUV maker without any U.S. manufacturing 

Porsche is one of the most iconic car brands in the world. The Porsche 911, launched in 1964 and legendary for its sloping roofline and pronounced rear haunches, commands a status similar to the Ferrari F40 or the Lamborghini Miura.

Why then is Porsche’s stock down 21% so far this year, while Ferrari’s is up 8%?

In effect, Porsche is one among many Volkswagen brands, with its SUVs being built on the same platforms as less-premium models. 

Becoming more like Mercedes or BMW comes with pitfalls: These are firms with forward price/earnings ratios in the single digits, well below Porsche’s multiple of around 18 times. 

Meanwhile, Ferrari gets away with an eye-watering valuation of 47 times forward earnings
