Are negative interest rates about to make a comeback?
Martin Schlegel, the head of the Swiss National Bank, discussed that possibility after the bank brought interest rates down by a half point to 0.5%
The Swiss central bank as well as the European Central Bank, the Bank of Japan, Sweden’s Riksbank and Denmark’s Nationalbank all employed negative interest rates after the 2008 financial crisis.
The U.S. Federal Reserve among others always held rates above zero, using quantitative easing to loosen policy.
“Nobody likes negative interest rates. Also, the Swiss National Bank does not like negative interest rates,” says Schlegel.
“Nevertheless, at current juncture we cannot exclude negative interest rates in the future.”
