Two years after the bailout, Greece underwent the largest sovereign bond restructuring ever. The last debt that Greece sold before the bailout – €8bn of it – was added to the bonfire.

A yield of 5 per cent for Greek risk sounds wildly low. Yet 5 per cent is very high relative to one alternative.

Greece paid less than 3 per cent, on average, on its debt to official creditors in 2013

The IMF and other eurozone lenders already own four-fifths of all of the debt remaining after the restructuring. Thus they bear most of the risk on a pile that remains more than 170 per cent of Greece’s output.

Let the new bond go forth to the yield-hunters, then. The bonds are under English law, and thus harder for Greece to restructure than local law debt.

That may be one reason why those with nerves will invest.
