Just five years after COVID-19, the risk of another pandemic is edging higher; H5N1 bird flu
Though H5N1 bird flu is hardly our only infectious-disease threat with pandemic potential, the virus impacts wild birds and domestic flocks across five continents and has now reached many species of mammals, including dairy cattle and pets.
Mice can carry it. Rats can carry it. Even flies.
The virus can spread through the eyes, or through consuming milk or undercooked meat or eggs.
It is also airborne, and winds may carry it for several miles.
If it mutates to enable human-to-human spread, a bird flu pandemic risks a demographic, societal and economic shock far greater than COVID.
Every human infection is an opportunity for H5N1 bird flu to mutate, raising pandemic risk
David Kotok MarketWatch 24 March 2025
Unfortunately, bird flu is no longer confined to birds. Last March it was identified in cows for the first time.
Scientists have long considered bird flu, or H5N1, a leading candidate for causing a human pandemic
