Winston Churchill described it as the worst decision he had ever made

 Reimposition of the gold standard after the First World War at the old rate originally set in 1717 of three pounds, seventeen shillings and ten pence, was a total disaster for Britain, as later acknowledged by Winston Churchill, then Chancellor, who described it as the worst decision he had ever made.

Churchill was appointed Chancellor of the Exchequer in 1924 under Stanley Baldwin and oversaw Britain's disastrous return to the Gold Standard, which resulted in deflation, unemployment, and the miners' strike that led to the General Strike of 1926.
