Trump and the Dollar
The President wants a weak greenback but his tariffs make it stronger.
Mr. Trump’s oft-stated desire for a weak dollar.
The President has a mercantilist view of exchange rates, which is that weakness is strength.
He thinks a weak dollar helps the competitiveness of U.S. exports, which in turn will reduce the U.S. trade deficit with the world.
Stephen Miran, now nominated to chair Mr. Trump’s Council of Economic Advisers argues that a chronically overvalued dollar is the main cause of the U.S. trade deficit with the world.
