The White House said Europe risks “civilizational erasure” as a result of decades of economic decline, political censorship and immigration, according to a new national security document that amounts to another sharp Trump administration broadside against the continent.
The 29-page National Security Strategy, published overnight and signed by President Donald Trump, said that Europe’s cultural and political failures pose a bigger threat to the continent’s way of life than its poor economic performance.
“This economic decline is eclipsed by the real and more stark prospect of civilizational erasure,” the report said. “Should present trends continue, the continent will be unrecognizable in 20 years or less.”

The EU has fined Elon Musk's social media platform X €120m (£105m) over its blue tick badges - prompting an angry reaction from the US.
"Europe is taxing Americans to subsidise a continent held back by Europe's own suffocating regulations," Brendan Carr, chair of the FCC wrote on X.
His comments echoed those made by US Vice-President JD Vance.
He lashed out at the EU amid rumours of its forthcoming fine on Thursday - claiming the platform was being punished "for not engaging in censorship".

The most eye-catching feature of the document was its highly critical references to this country’s European allies. Their military spending was “insufficient.” Their economies were afflicted by “stagnation” and “decline.” They even faced the prospect of “civilizational erasure.”
One can tell from the opening section of the document why both the Times and the WSJ hated it, for it is a succinct repudiation of the foreign policies of both the Clintons and the Bushes—not to mention the Kennedys. It rejects the notion of an “indispensable nation” with a duty to police the globe
The document reprises Vice President Vance’s Munich speech
about Europe’s various pathologies, notably “elite-driven, anti-democratic restrictions on core liberties” and “the disastrous ‘climate change’ and ‘Net Zero’ ideologies.”
As I mentioned above, one striking passage very much upset the European establishment:
Economic decline is eclipsed by the real and more stark prospect of civilizational erasure. The larger issues facing Europe include activities of the European Union and other transnational bodies that undermine political liberty and sovereignty, migration policies that are transforming the continent and creating strife, censorship of free speech and suppression of political opposition, cratering birth rates, and loss of national identities and self-confidence.
